I’ve had my eye on ButcherBox for so long, but I kept putting it off because I wasn’t sure it’d be worth it. You’re probably in the same boat, and that’s why you’re reading this ButcherBox review, right? When ButcherBox asked me to give them a try, I didn’t even hesitate. (This is a good time for me to tell you this post contains affiliate links and I was provided with a box from them so I could write a review.)
I’ve been drowning in work lately–totally behind on one of my main quarterly goals, my next website launch–so this ButcherBox shipment really saved the week/month.
Meal planning is one less thing I have to think about. It’s basically done for me because I already have the meat in the freezer to plan around. AND they suggest recipes (I got an email after I ordered my box).
ButcherBox Review of the Options
You can get a Curated Box or a Custom Box. I got a curated beef and chicken box.
Within each of those categories, you can do a Classic Box or a Big Box.
Let’s break that down further (since even though they were on my radar as quality meat that would be delivered to my door, I never actually knew what I’d be getting if I signed up):
- Curated Classic Box: 8-11 lbs of meat (24 meals), $146.00/box
- Curated Big Box: 16-22 lbs of meat (48 meals), $269.00/box
- Custom Classic Box: 9-14 lbs of meat (30 meals), $169.00/box
- Custom Big Box: 18-26 lbs of meat (60 meals), $306.00/box
You can choose from beef, chicken, pork, and seafood and have boxes delivered at the frequency that works for you. (So no worries about overloaded freezers and deliveries that just won’t stop.)
If there’s one thing I love, it’s options.
I got two 10 oz. New York strip steaks, 2 1-lb packages of ground beef, chicken tenders, bottom round roast (2.25 lbs), boneless chicken thighs, and as a bonus: a bag of pre-cooked chicken nuggets (more on those in a sec).
They can’t thaw fast enough. I’m so eager to cook that roast and those steaks! The roast gives me another opportunity to use the Dutch oven I got a couple of Christmases ago. I think I’ll turn the steaks into a date night at home occasion when my daughter has plans with friends.
I’m most excited about the beef because, for whatever reason, we don’t usually buy a lot of it. But this beef is a source of Omega-3s, vitamins, and minerals, and I want to add it to my monthly menu now.
Pros of ButcherBox
- The convenience–one order and I have a freezer full of meat to work with, which makes meal-planning and shopping easier.
- The quality! I chose a box with chicken and beef. The beef is grass-fed, grass-finished, pasture-raised, humanely raised, and never given antibiotics or added hormones. The chicken is free-range organic and meets GAP 3 claims. Since I’ve started lifting weights more regularly again, I appreciate the protein even more than usual.
- The variety (I want to try some of their seafood and bison next time, but even this chicken and beef box has plenty to work with!)
- The delivery was quick–I got my order in less than a week. (Plus, shipping is always free!)
- The packing was perfect. Everything was still totally frozen.
- They even send you suggested recipes based on what you got in your box. There’s also a ton of recipes.
- Prices were competitive when I compared them with the stores I usually shop at.
Cons of ButcherBox
- I didn’t get a text when my box was delivered (an email came a few hours later). Ultimately, it didn’t matter because I was at home and heard it get dropped off, plus it was packaged with dry ice, which meant it wasn’t as urgent as it could’ve been to get it off the porch and into the fridge or freezer. I had a tracking number, so if I’d been out of the house, I could’ve kept an eye on it, too.
- If you’re low on freezer space, the boxes might have more in there than you’re prepared for. I just made it. Phew!
- Not all budgets allow for buying this much meat at one time, and smaller, more frequent shipments aren’t available.
Promo Alert (Act Fast on This Limited Time Offer)
I wanted to get this ButcherBox review out ASAP because of a special they’re running.
If you order by March 31, 2023, you’ll save $100 ($20.00 off a box for the first five months) and get some free, precooked chicken nuggets in every box for the first year of your membership. Just use the code MARCH100 at checkout.
I love precooked nuggets I can throw in the air-fryer at lunch, since that means I don’t have to stop working in the middle of the day to put something more complicated together if I didn’t get a chance to prep meals ahead of time.
Is ButcherBox Worth It?
If you’re on the fence about ButcherBox and your budget’s set up for you to buy a lot of meat at one time, I think it’s totally worth it to try it out, at least once. You can cancel at any time, so if it ends up not being for you and your family, at least you’ll know for sure.
I like how choosing a box takes some of the pressure off of me to plan meals.
It also means I don’t have to hunt down quality meat at different stores and then take the time to go buy it. I don’t enjoy driving in congested areas (like where I live) or going to grocery stores, so I’m a big fan of things being shipped straight to my door, especially when shipping is free.
