Man, a part of me misses the days of two-step skincare. I’d just wash my face, slap on moisturizer, and call it good. My skin looked great. I was also 18. Face serum benefits weren’t even on my radar back then but for the record, I kind of wish they had been!
Now that I’m twice as old (and honestly, this really started well before my mid-30s), I’ve been obsessed with finding the best skin care. I used to focus on my moisturizer (especially night creams) but I’ve stumbled into the wide world of face serum benefits (there are plenty!) more recently.
So let’s talk about face serum benefits, when to apply face serum, and whether to use serum or moisturizer first.
What I’m Looking for in a Serum
I want products that pack a lot of punch and I’m willing to pay more for quality—as long as I can see that I’m getting something out of it.
I also want something that makes me look younger now and will continue providing benefits so I look younger than my age, well, forever.
When I feel like I look refreshed (or at least a little less than absolutely haggard), my mental state is better. Look better, feel better, right? My skin care routine—including face serums—can do as much for what you can’t see, as it does for what you can see on the outside.
I want minimized wrinkles and a glow that I can tell myself tricks people into thinking I’m at least 10 years younger.
Finally, I want skin that looks so hydrated and even in tone that I can rock the bare face, red lips trend whenever I want.
So, can face serums provide all those benefits? Absolutely!
Note: This post is sponsored. I teamed up with Formulyst to review the important reasons to use a facial serum in your daily skin care routine.
Face Serum Benefits
There are different types of face serums and each one comes with its own benefits and perks.
Absorption and Ingredients
They absorb into the skin better (more on that in a minute). You just need to know when to apply face serum in your routine to reap the most benefits.
You get more bang for your buck, generally. Serums are concentrated. Plus, because they work so well, you’ll actually get results instead of spinning your wheels (and blowing your money) on a lot of different, more diluted products.
That concentration means there’s less room for ingredients that aren’t so good for your skin (fellow sensitive skin gals, rejoice!). Serums kind of just get straight to the point, like that blunt friend you love because you know she’s not messing around when you ask her to help you with something.
Continuing with that blunt friend metaphor, you can pinpoint exactly what you need help with and find a serum for that specific thing. Need brightening? Vitamin C serum. Want anti-aging effects? Look for a serum with retinol, hydroxy acids, or niacinamide.
There are even serums that help you get more hydrated skin (I love hyaluronic acid for this and it’s one of the top ingredients I look for in serums and moisturizers).
Keep in mind that some serums are suitable for morning or night while others are best used once per day.
You can layer serums to achieve benefits for different skin concerns (Formulyst recommends reviewing the ingredients and doing your homework to make sure you don’t combine ingredients that can increase the likelihood of skin irritation or decrease the effectiveness of one or more face serums.
Because serums are so lightweight, your skin won’t feel gross (for lack of a better word) from layers of product.
You can use the same serum all year and then switch up the moisturizer on top as seasons and skin care needs change. No need to shake up your whole routine unless you just want to.
Depending on your skin type, you may prefer a serum as your moisturizer. Struggle with oily-looking skin? Try serums without moisturizer (choose wisely; you don’t want to dry your skin out too much and increase oil production in response) and see how that goes.
When to Apply Face Serum: Serum or Moisturizer First?
Adding more products into your routine can get a little confusing. When to apply face serum? Should I use serum or moisturizer first? How long should I wait between products to get all the face serum benefits I can get?
I apply my serum first. It’s typically a lightweight solution compared to moisturizer, and because of all the goodness inside, I don’t want to create a barrier between it and my skin with my moisturizer.
Why That Order? Formulyst Has the Answer
The Formulyst review of face serum benefits mentions why the serums are usually thinner. It has to do with how well the products can be absorbed into the skin.
Typical serums (not the oil-based ones, those are different) have smaller molecules than other products and can work their way deeper into the skin and create the change you want to see in your complexion.
Ideally, I wait at least a few minutes before putting the moisturizer on top. If it’s morning and I’ll be in the sun a lot, I put sunscreen on top of that.
Will There Be a Formulyst Review?
I might review Formulyst skincare in the future and report back on how it works for my dry, sensitive, rosacea-prone skin. Keep checking back here and/or follow me on social media so you won’t miss it if I do. It’ll probably be on Instagram first, so go click the Follow button if you haven’t already done it.
Thank you again to Formulyst for the opportunity to review face serum benefits. While I was researching this to make sure I didn’t miss anything, I actually learned a few new things!
